They think therefore I am

Music and sound mixed at the Sonic Arts Research Center, 2009

They Think, Therefore I Am is a response to the "headscarf debate" in Turkey. In 2008, the debate had become an explosive national issue, as the ruling party has attempted to repeal the law that forbids girls and women who cover their heads from attending school.

In the video, the artist is shot sitting down, facing the camera. Two sets of male hands alternately wrap a scarf around her head and tear it off, gestures that represent efforts to force women to be either "religious" or "secular." Finally, she stands and performs the same actions herself, but the sound and gesture are no longer synchronized: she puts on the scarf while declaring herself secular, or takes it off while declaring herself to be religious. The gradual process of de-synchronization between the gestures and the digitally processed utterances convey the desire to transcend the constraints of the current situation, in which a woman is not allowed to decide for herself.
